Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Could I be a Bird Owner?

A: This is a complicated question and not easy to answer.  There are many things to consider when thinking about owning a bird. Birds are very delicate creatures. They require adequate housing and plenty of attention to thrive. Their life span is long among the larger parrots. Many outlive their owners with proper routine care and a healthy diet of food and love.  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Can I live with the mess?
  • Can I afford the food and medical bills?
  • Can I live with the Noise?
  • Do I have several hours EVERY day?
  • Do I have other Pets that could harm the bird?
  • Do I have small children?

These are all important questions to consider before bringing a bird into your family.

Q: How do I start the Adoption?

A: You begin the process by fostering with the intent to adopt.  Please review the  Adoption procedures and fill out the application.  After your application is received it will be reviewed to make sure you meet the requirements.  An "In Home" evaluation and interview will be performed.  This is more for the bird then you and is completely painless.  We want to make sure that we are providing the bird with his forever home...even though he may out live you.  If you are chosen then there is a 90 day trial where you foster the bird.  We will try and do a visits, at your convince, to check up on how things are going.  As always we are always available to answer any questions.

Q: Do you have a facility? Can I visit a bird?

A: We are sorry but we are Not Open To The Public.  We do not have a shelter or facility to house our birds. The rescue and all it's affiliated location are in our homes. Because our birds are in private homes, we know you will understand our need for privacy, as well as that of the birds and their safety. Therefore, we will only able to accept visitors after completion of an application, references checked and the home visit. Only after these steps have been completed and you are an approved applicant will you be invited into the location where the birds are available for adoption. You will then be asked to come for several visits, asking that you help with the care of your potentional new family member to see better as to how well the bird may connect with you.  Remember, birds choose their companions and even though you may want a specific bird, he/she may not choose you.

Q: How do I pick up my new companion?

A: After several visits with your bird, you will then meet us at the Avian Vets office (Dr. Kersting), where you will meet Dr. David Kersting and his staff. Your bird will get a well bird check and any treatment that it might need to complete the physical or perhaps it's annual vist. Should the bird have any previous vet history, then the accumilated amount of that history will be re-embursed to us by way of paying the amount to our avian vet care fund established with the vet.  None of this money is paid to the rescue, it is paid directly to Dr. Kersting's office.  At that point you will be allowed to take your bird to its new home. You must have a suitable carrier that is yours to take your bird home. We will ask that you let us know that the bird has transported safely to your home.

Q: What are Follow up visits?:

A: As previously agreed to, we will want to check on the progress of your new bird and how your family is adjusting to the new addition in the household. We will schedule in advance of the visit. These visits are not meant as any judgement, but to ask or anwer any questions that may have come up. They are completly painless.  These visits will done during the 90 days of fostering until completion of that time and the signing of the adoption contract.

Q: When is the adoption complete?:

A: After the 90 days of fostering has been completed and the final home visit has been done. The representative for AGBR will then bring two copies of the adoption contract to your home for signature. The first will be signed, the copy that you keep will be recorded as such and AGBR will retain the other.

Q: Should I decide that after the adoption contract is signed that I have changed my mind, then what will happen?

A: As stated in the adoption contract, the bird must be returned to AGBR! There will be no exception to the statement and a representative should be called to pick up the bird. Should a period of more than 30 days have past, all fees paid to date will not be reimbursed.
